Conference

A DIALOGUE WITH JUDITH BUTLER
Duane Duncan and Michele Lobo

Judith Butler is a well known American feminist and post structural philosopher and someone we really admire. We have read almost all her books such as The Psychic life of power, Gender trouble and Excitable speech. You can imagine our elation when we heard she was giving a public lecture in Sydney, entitled 'Giving an Account of Oneself". We decided we had to go to this event, which was held on the 18th of June in the heart of Sydney city.

It was an experience we will always treasure. It was a visual delight just to see her but a far greater pleasure to listen to her. Using the photographs taken at Abu Ghraib prison and widely published in the media, she asked the question, "What does it mean to be ethically responsive to the suffering of Others?

We were invited to reflect on whether the photographs of the prisoners being tortured and shamed led to a moral indifference. Was this indifference a result of norms of civilisation and racialisation, that 'framed' meanings of the prisoners and the war, in ways that blind us? It was really enthralling to listen to how she communicated so effectively with us, even though she seemed to be in conversation with herself too. Her humility as well as her deep insights and wisdom are something that we will always remember.
