Travel and Research: Financial Assistance
The School has a limited amount of funds available to graduate research students to assist in meeting travel and research costs associated with their research. The following guidelines have been developed to ensure an equitable distribution of these funds among students in the School, and that the allocation of the funds has the greatest benefit in terms of student research experience.
1. The funds are available to meet needs supported by a student's supervisory committee.
2. In supporting travel to conferences priority will be given to those participating formally in the conference. For international travel the applicant needs to show evidence of applying elsewhere for funds, particularly to the University. For interstate travel it is recommended that students also apply for external funding. It is recognised that in some cases students would benefit from attending conferences without giving a paper, and the committee will take this into account where the student makes a case supported by the supervisory committee.
3. Applications may be made either before or after the travel period. In either documentation of costs must be provided.
4. Requests up to $750 will be considered.
5. The allocation of funds in each round will be decided by a committee comprising the Graduate Coordinator, a member of staff and a post graduate student. That committee will rank applications taking into account:
a. How
the proposed activity can improve the output of the research;
b. The link between the proposed
activity and needs identified in reports of the supervision committee.
6. There will be two rounds of applications per year, one in April and one in October. Advice will be given by email of actual dates.Applications to be submitted to the Co-ordinator, SGES.
7. Applications can be sought for travel 3 months before or after the deadline.
8. Students are not eligible for more than one grant per year, and would not normally receive more than two grants during the candidacy of a Masters and three grants during the candidacy of a Ph.D.
