Teaching Experience:

I identify the general challenge in teaching the students who chose to take my subjects as that of keeping within budgeting constraints while offering the best balance between theory interpretation and technique in laboratory, lecture/tutorial, and field settings.

To this end I have used many of the standard devices, and have also made three teaching videos, one of which (Waves and Tides: an explanatory account using models) is still in use. In 1996, I began presenting my subjects in 'flexible mode', for instance by giving students on-line access to lecture notes in hypertext. Since 2006 my undergraduate units have been offered in ) Distance Education mode using DVDs and the University MUSO (on line) system.

All of the course units mentioned in the account below, except those in climatology, were initiated by me. The post-graduate units refer to two demands: the first was most evident in the 1970s when Monash University launched the first Australian master's degree in Environmental Science, and the second demand refers to the post-graduate Diploma of Applied GIS.
http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/ges/research/Gis/public/info.html
offered since mid-2001.

The direction taken by my teaching initiatives refer to curriculum changes designed to meet the needs of economic/work-place reform, especially in response to changes in public policy and the emergence of the information age.

In all teaching activities summarised in this document, I have been responsible for design, delivery and assessment.
Undergraduate teaching experience:
Apart from the fourth-year course-work units, and service for the Environmental Engineering curriculum (GES3820: GIS for Environmental Management), all units taught have been electives.

In nearly all cases, my course units include a field-work component.

My undergraduate students come from a range of Faculties: Arts, Science (BSc; B Env Sci; B App Sci), and to a lesser extent from the faculties of IT and Business/Economics. Students enrolled for combined degrees refer to the Arts/Science course, the Arts/Law course, the Science/Law course, the Arts/IT course, the Art/Business course and the Science/IT course.
Since 2005, GES3820 has been a compulsory unit in the B Env Eng. (Gippsland Campus) course

From 2008, GES3820 will be a compulsory part of the new Town and Regional Land-use Planning course (Berwick campus).

At first-year level I have taught large classes in Climatology, Geomorphology and Natural Resources Management, and, for a few years in the mid-1970s, a course unit in introductory soils and regolith for Earth Science students.

At Second-year level I have taught large classes in geomorphology and its applications in Natural Resources Management.

At Third-year level, I have taught course units devoted to delivery of content about geomorphology and its applications, Quaternary Science, and its applications, and, between 1996 and 2006, GIS and its applications in environmental science, plus (since 1999) GIS and its applications in social science.

As part of my duties as coordinator of Fourth-year studies, I taught history and philosophy of geographical science 1981-1989.

Since 2001, as Coordinator of the Post-graduate Diploma in (nature and applications of) GIS, I have units introducing the nature of spatial data and spatial data models: one for environmental science students, and one for social science students., In addition, I have taught GYM4620 which devoted to the nature and application of digital earth-image data processing. I have always assisted in the course unit introducing application of GNSS as well taking full responsibility for the course units for GIS project formulation and execution.

In summary, since 1967, I have initiated, taught, and assessed student enrolled in over twenty different undergraduate units. Many of these units have been delivered many times. In addition, I have contributed one or more (sometimes as many as eight) lectures and a number of practical and tutorial sessions to course units coordinated by colleagues.

At present, (as a pre-retirement half-pay staff member of the school of G&ES) I deliver lectures and contribute to tutorial, practical and field teaching by invitation, and deliver such units as are still assigned to me: GES2160: Coastal Geomorphology and Management; ENV421E/521E Coastal Environments during Summer School; and GYM4650 GIS project formulation, GYM4660, GIS project execution during semester 2 each year.

Post-graduate course-work units delivered for five years or more starting at one time or another over the last thirty years include

a)

MEnvSci course units:

  • Coastal Environments (still current),
  • Soil Salinity and Deterioration,
  • Environmental Geology,
  • Cartography and Remote Sensing,
  • Soil Capability and related planningproblems,

Research and Publications:

Statement of Ideas and Foundations for Research Activity:
My primary interests in the world of ideas are in

  1. The nature of environmental stability especially in reference to the late Cainozoic.
  2. The application of environmental sciences to the challenge of mitigating land degradation. The latter interest has led to a commitment to the establishment of GIS and IP in our department.
