Hardware and Gis Software
Hardware:
Computers:
- 15 High performance Desktop computers (Win 2000/WinXP) and a HP XW8200 workstation in the GIS lab.
- For teaching, 90 "high-end" Pentium PC computers (Arts and Science Faculties computer lab) are being used.
Input Devices:
Former emphasis on "in-lab" input devices is giving way to handling of data from data vendors and custodians of State Spatial Data Infrastructure (from whom we have data access for teaching and research purposes). Nevertheless, from time to time, analogue -to-digital conversion of archival maps is required, and if a scanning bureau is not called on for this, the digitising tablet is used.
- An A0 digitising tablet to allows the input of digital data from paper or mylar-based maps or from aerial photographs.
- An archival 1600 bpi tape drive reader used to download old format Landsat image data files.
- A Umax A3 color scanner is also available.
- GPS: Trimble ProXRS, GeoXT unit for mobile mapping.
Output Devices:
- Two A0 raster plotters (HP755CM) and EPSON 9600 attached to the Network.
- An A4/A3 Epson Photo Stylus Networked Inkjet printer for output from the Windows based PC 's.
- A4 Xerox Phaser Networked Colour Laser Printer is also now available from PC's, Unix and Macs.
- A4/A3 HP5000 Black and White networked Laser printer
Back-up devices:
CD/ DVD Read and Write burners for CD-R and CD-W type of media. DVD +/-R and +/-RW for burning data. Zip and Jaz drives are also available for storage and backup, besides Novell Network drives for temporary backups.
GIS Software:
NB: The following software products are used under educational licences. Accordingly, software vendors are acknowledged in these terms as research project sponsors (see Publications ).
