Introduction:
The Centre was established in 1988 in the Department of Geography and Environmental Science (now the School of Geography and Environmental Science), Monash University, as part of applying our long-standing experience in:
- Researching the nature of environmental stability, and problems concerning 1) land degradation (weed infestation, soil salinization, soil erosion), 2) geomorphological analysis, 3) environmental resource management, and 4) geodemographic analysis.
- Environmental mapping and monitoring using digital image processing and GIS.
- Demographic analysis, urban and regional planning, socio-economic and spatial analysis from digital spatial and related data bases.
The Centre undertakes:
- Education and training in GIS and remote sensing, with strong emphasis on scientific applications to environmental and resource management.
- Contract research and specialist consultancies.
- Implementation of GIS for mapping and modelling in local government, transport and land use planning applications.
