University Site licences/GIS
Gis Software and Digital Spatial Datasets
The Centre for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the School of Geography and Environmental Science, Faculty of Arts, has negotiated site licences for Monash University from several GIS software vendors, a Global Positioning Systems vendor and Victorian digital data (in several themes) for use by Monash University staff and students FOR TEACHING AND RESEARCH ONLY, at cost effective rates. Commercial licences for softwares are available by negotiation with the vendors. The above contracts are at significant cost to School of Geography and Environmental Science, but represent substantial cost savings overall to Monash users as they take advantage of the arrangements.

The GIS Softwares and Digital data currently available as parts of University Site Licence Agreement are:
A. GIS Softwares:
- Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc ( ESRI
) products:
ARC /INFO, PC ArcInfo, ARC VIEW (with several extensions), ARCPAD, ARC Internet Map Server (ARCIMS), and, Map Objects, ARC CAD, Digital Data of the World 1:3M, USA and several other ESRI products.
- MapInfo Professional, Desktop mapping software, MapBasic, etc as a University Site Licence and Digital Data for the World and several countries provided by MapInfo.
- Trimble , Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receivers with GPS PathFinder Office software through special arrangements with Trimble's Victorian dealer Ultimate Positioning.
B. Digital Spatial Datasets:
- Australian Census data CDATA1986, 1991, 1996, 2001
- IRDB (enables users to select data and geographic areas and view the results as tables, maps or graphs. It includes data from the ABS as well as other Commonwealth agencies)
- Australia Landsat 7 Mosaic 2000 ACRES mosaic of 369 individual scenes in a seamless ECW format.
- AUSLIG Topo-250K Series 1 Topographic data for State of Victoria and some parts of Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, Northern Territory).The data is in three themes Hydrography, Infrastructure and Relief
- AUSLIG 9Sec DEM (approx 250m resolution) Version 1 and Version 2 covering whole of Australia (37 tiles)@1:1 million scale
- VicMapTopographic (1:30000) Online Acess through Monash University Library
- VicMap Topographic (1:25000) The physical infrastructure and features of Victoria, including water bodies, rivers, creeks, rail and tram networks, contours, key landmarks, emergency service (police, fire, SES and ambulance) stations. The data are structured as related themes including, hydrology, transport, relief, place and vegetation
- VicMap Property Information about Victoria's basic administrative framework of land subdivision, including the delineation of land parcels and properties and related descriptions such as street address, parcel descriptor and council property number
- VicMap Roads Formerly known as the State Digital Road Network (SDRN). A detailed and intelligent data model of Victoria's entire road network including road furniture features such as traffic lights, railway crossings, roundabouts, bridges and tunnels and street address points. All features are fully attributed, including pertinent information such as road name, route number, surface/use classification, traffic direction, suburb/locality, height limit.
- VicMap Image Vicmap Image represents a suite of statewide satellite image mosaic products. Statewide Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) mosaic for the summer of 1999/2000. The whole state is covered in all the 8 bands (1999/2000) and there is also some archival satellite imageries, Aerial Photographs and Orthophoto mosaics available.
- VicMap Elevation Elevation provides those elements required for the description of height in a range of ways, including spot heights, contours, and digital elevation models.
- Victorian GPSnet Access to online GPS Base station network in Victoria.
- Victorian SMES Access to online Survey Marks Enquiry Service in Victoria.
- Victorian Planning Schemes, Current as of 18th July, 2001.
- Victorian Crown Land Data in ArcInfo Format for the whole state.
- Victorian Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVC100) in Arcview format on 1:100000 maptiles for the whole state.
- Victorian Geology (1:250,000 scale) is available in digital format.
- Victorian Gridded Airborne Geophysical data, Located Airborne Geophysics and GIS data from State Geological Survey Department.
- Victorian Flora Database product named VIRIDANS (CD -ROM based) ( GES users only)
- Melbourne Metropolitan Area, detailed digital data, for Local Government Area boundaries (LGA), Railways, Hydrological features and 1 metre contour data with spot heights.
- Electronic Melways Edition 26 in Digital form (for GES users only)
All the above softwares and data may be used within the designated Monash University campus for teaching and research after signing a sub-licensing agreement form, providing SAP codes and paying an annual contribution to the site licence fees and/or consultancy charges .
Training for staff and students in any of the above GIS/GPS products may be arranged at the Centre for GIS, School of Geography and Environmental Science at nominal cost.
