Community Service
Staff of the School undertake a wide range of activities in the community.
Organisations and members of the public are urged to identify staff expertise relevant to their needs and approach the appropriate member of staff accordingly.
Five major areas of involvement are outlined and a number of examples of specific commitments currently being made are given.
Professional Organisations
- Representation on professional and scholarly bodies and their subcommittees
- Organisation of professional and scholarly conferences and meetings
- Advice on a wide range of specialist activities such as reviewing written and other materials (e.g. research proposals, funding applications and critical assessments of activities).
- Managerial advice
- Examination and Review of theses and other scholarly works such as journal articles.
Educational Institutions
- Curriculum advice at all levels of school and university
- Examination functions
- Speaking at functions concerned with the academic areas of concern in the School as well as its specific content areas.
Government (all three levels)
- Policy advice
- Seminar organisation and participation
- Briefings
- Comment on formal Inquiries and other critical input.
Media
- Written and other critical contributions (interviews and commentaries)
- Advice to journalists
- Editorial assistance
Wider Community: participation in critical community functions (NGOs & ad hoc groups):
- Organisation of community actions
- Written and other critical contributions to actions
- Community representation on professional, educational, government and media bodies (e.g. inquiries)
- Facilitation of community-educational connections, e.g. the School offers a Graduate Environmental Science suubject called the
- Environmental Internship that explicitly encourages graduate student involvement in critical community activities.
