Archaeology of rock art and symbolic behaviour

In a series of separate but related projects across northern Australia and Torres Strait, our research has focused mainly on how an understanding of past symbolic behaviours can inform us on aspects of social emplacement, territoriality and inter-regional interaction. By studying rock images (rock paintings and drawings, engravings, stencils, prints), we have aimed to explore the sharing of symbolic conventions between regions, and symbolic discontinuities across space.
