Research and Development Experience

1987 - 1990

Development of the Loess Plateau Information System for the Sanchuan River Basin in China, funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Involved in the development of software for map data processing and manipulation, and the land suitability model for the Sanchuan River Basin, Shanxi Province in China.

1991 - 1995 Development of a knowledge-based spatial decision support system, ILUDSS, for rural land use planning on the island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland, UK.
1996 - 1997 Development of a wave energy information system for Ireland, collaborating with the Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre, University College Cork, Ireland
1997 Research and report on the feasibility of creating an information system to facilitate greater compliance and conservation within the CFP (Common Fisheries Policy), funded by the European Commission Directorate-General XIV. A collaborative research with Paradigm Technology Limited Dublin, Peregrine Systems Limited Dublin and University of Amsterdam. Involved in the development of a framework for integrating GIS, an expert system and a hypertext search engine.
1997 - 2000 Research and development of decision support systems (DSS) for regional resource use planning, in CHRRUPP (the Central Highlands Regional Resource Use Planning Project) funded by Land & Water Resources R&D Corporation (LWRRDC). Designed and developed JavaAHP (a web-based decision analysis tool for natural resource management), MOCA (a multi-objective decision support tool for project evaluation and prioritisation in regional resource use planning), WebMap (a web-based map browsing and query tool) and VegMan (a web-based information system for regional vegetation management).
2000 - 2001 Design of decision support tools for sustainable resource use in sugar production areas in the Northern Queensland of Australia, which is part of a project funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Sugar Production. Involved in the strategic planning and design of the NRM Tools (a toolkit for natural resource management), development and implementation of a Cane Land Allocation Model by integrating GIS and multi-criteria modelling, and development of a land use planning tool by integrating GIS and genetic algorithms.
2000 - 2001 Involved in the development of the framework for integrated ecological and economic modelling, which is a sub-project of a research project on ecologically sustainable development of land, water and marine resources in the Ord-Bonaparte region of Western Australia, funded by LWRRDC, CSIRO, the State of Western Australia and other government agencies and R&D corporations.
2002 - 2003 The evaluation of accessibility by public transport in Singapore using GIS
2002 - 2004 A study on current status and future possibilities of GIS supported education in schools in Singapore, funded by the Academic Research Fund of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
2003 - present Knowledge Integration and Exchange in Coastal Zone Management Decision Making, a project of Cooperative Research Centre for Coastal Zone, Estuary and Waterway Management, Australia (Coastal CRC ). Being involved in the development of a multi-criteria decision analysis tool.
