GES3330/GYM4330 Field study Logistics

PLANNING AND DATES

Information session: August 2010/details TBA
Pre-departure session: November 2010/details TBA

Field study: anticipated to take place between mid-January and mid-February, 2011, in Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces, South Africa. Does not include travel to and from Johannesburg.

Post-trip group work and presentations: All Clayton-based students wishing to complete this unit must be in Melbourne in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of Semester 1 (March 2011) for post-trip group work and presentations.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION

Given the high demand for a unique unit such as this there is a quota of 20 students for this subject. Students interested in taking this unit will need to have some basic conceptual understanding of issues in international development as well as some of the basic conceptual tools of economic geography and human geography.

Students selected for the study trip will be required to make their airline bookings immediately and submit a $500 non-refundable deposit to SGES.

COSTS

To be determined, subject to inflation and exchange rates. In 2009, the study program cost $2500. Price does not include airfare to Johannesburg and optional weekend at Kruger National Park. Undergraduate and Masters by Coursework students have in the past been eligible for a Monash Abroad grant of $500-$1000.
