Past Graduates - Kipling Zubevich

Balancing Business and Self

After an undergraduate education in engineering, Kipling Zubevich plunged into the world of management consulting with a global strategy firm. Travelling the world advising major corporations on their strategic direction was exciting, the hours long and the pressure intense. But after several years, Zubevich started asking himself if his work could help make the world a better place - even in a small way. He decided to return to study and chose the Graduate School of Geography and Environmental Science.

Kipling was unsure of his path through the Masters degree, but found himself moving away from the technical emphasis of his engineering training to focus on the social and political issues surrounding the environmental crisis - and possible solutions. "From there," said Kipling, "It was only a small side-step to subjects like Social and Sacred Ecology, which gave me some fantastic new perspectives on environmental issues, and new insights into my own place in the world."

Kipling is now starting the complex work of meshing these new perspectives with his business experience in a new role as Project Manager at the National Centre for Sustainability @ Swinburne.

"Completing a Masters degree at the GSES has been an invaluable experience," said Kipling. "Not only did it equip me with the credentials required to find satisfying employment in the environmental field, it gave me a vast range of skills and insights I draw on every day.
