Society of Monash University Geography Students (SMUGS)
Get Involved in Smugs!

The Society of Monash University Geography Students (SMUGS) has been a highly active society since it was reinstituted in 1999, and it has held a number of successful social events. It has also provided scholastic and vocational information to Geography students in the form of Careers Information Nights and publication of the Globie's Good Essay Guide.
Members share a common interest in geography studies and benefit from the range of sponsored activities available to them. SMUGS social events, including BBQs, bar nights and the annual Globe ("it's not a Ball, it's a Globe"), have been fun and facilitated social interaction amongst students and staff.

SMUGS IN 2003 - A message from the President Krissy Bates
The club in 2003 got off to a very slow start with very few old committee having the time to help continue the club. The founding President Jono Brown left the country and the club seemed to disappear for awhile
But thankfully with the help of a few loyal SMUGS people (you all know who you are and I'm extremely grateful to you all), I managed to get the club registered, pass our AUDIT (thanks Deb!!!) and hold an EGM to elect a new committee. We survived the first semester rush of getting the club ready and in second semester started to hold events.
Whilst in comparison with other years, we only managed to get a few events up and running, however it was all in preparation for a huge upcoming 2004.
Our first event was a Careers Night held on Wednesday August 6th in conjunction with the Science Society. A huge thank-you to Danni Martin for organising this highly successful event off her own back. For the third year in a row the attendance at the Geography Careers Night was the largest in the series of the Science Careers nights organised by the various science faculty clubs.
We held our annual GLOBE at Coopers Inn in the city on August 29th and from all the reports I have gotten back from many of our 100 special guests it was a fantastic night. It was to celebrate 'the end of an era' with the club looking like folding, however the interest it generated ensured that the club would survive in 2004.
Our third event was an entertaining night bowling at Chadstone Bowl in September. Many congratulations to our winner scoring well over 300 points in two games, Andrew Coutts!!!
And finally to the new committee who where elected at the AGM on September 18th 2003. Thank you, thank you, thank you…
It means a great deal to me to know that the club is going to survive and that I wasn't the last President. Studying Geography at Monash has been one of the most rewarding things I have done in my many years here and being apart of SMUGS has helped make that experience even better. I wish every single Geography Student a very successful future in Geography and urge them to get involved in SMUGS in 2004… See you at the bar…
