GES Work Experience

Work experience can be a rewarding way to augment your studies with ‘real life’ activities. You can, for instance, experience the processes involved in original university research that leads to publications and may be incorporated into lectures in the future. You can also develop skills in various field and laboratory techniques.

Volunteer work is welcomed in many research activities in the School, including field work. Recent examples include, but are not limited to, volunteers assisting Assoc. Prof. David Dunkerley on field work at Fowlers Gap in western NSW, and volunteers assisting Dr Meredith Orr and Dr John Grindrod in field work on King Island, Bass Strait, and in related laboratory work.

Work experience can be included in your curriculum vitae (C.V.) as an indication not only of your experience but of your interest in university studies and your degree of extra-curricular involvement. It is a good way to get know your lecturers, who can also be referees for you in work applications.

In addition, students who have completed third year studies are invited to apply for the G.E.S. Summer Vacation Scholarships. The scholarships include a basic stipend and holders can participate in research activities of mutual benefit to the student and the School. Scholarship work is normally undertaken for four to eight weeks in the November to February period.

Outside organisations may also be interested in students undertaking work experience. Science students can participate in the faculty’s Industry Based Learning (IBL) programme which offers paid work experience opportunities. Paid work experience is also offered through the Environmental Management Mentorship Programme (contact Will Symons on ph. 9905 9260 or email will.symons@general.monash.edu.au for details). The latter programme offers individual and group project opportunities within Monash University and external organisations in the area of environmental management.
