Why Choose Monash Arts Research?

International Reputation for Excellence in Research

Monash University’s strong performance is reflected in our membership of the prestigious Group of Eight (Go8), representing the top research universities in Australia.

Monash Arts is internationally recognised for its research with independent reviews consistently ranking our schools highly in the international arena and among the nation's best. In 2008 we were placed in the top third of the world's finest universities, as determined by The Times Higher Education Supplement. The social sciences at Monash were ranked 25 in the top 100 universities. Monash’s Arts and Humanities disciplines were ranked 33 out of the top 100 universities worldwide.

Another example of strong performance is a recent report by the Philosophical Gourmet Report of graduate programs in Philosophy in the English speaking world, where the Philosophy and Bioethics program ranked fourth in Australasia. This means Monash is comparable to departments in the top 30 philosophy programs in the United States.

Quality Supervision

The Faculty of Arts attracts one of the largest enrolments in higher degrees by research in Australia. Monash Arts scholars have distinguished themselves on international and national levels as leading commentators, theorists and critics in a wide range of research areas. The Faculty Supervisor Accreditation Scheme is one of the ways we assure quality supervision. New staff are mentored and provided with a structured program before taking on supervision roles, and only research-active staff with strong records in bringing candidates to completion are allowed to act as main supervisors of PhD and Masters research candidates.

The Faculty of Arts is divided into eight academic schools offering research programs in a number of disciplines. Monash Arts provides high-quality research programs in English, communications, performance studies, geography, environmental science, historical studies, humanities, social sciences, languages, cultures, linguistics, music, philosophy, bioethics, political and social inquiry.

Flexibility in Candidature

Most research programs are available full-time, part-time or via external (off campus) mode. Enrolment by external mode allows candidates to undertake research off campus and this can be interstate or overseas. The university has recently relaxed its residency requirement. Students only need to be on campus for five days per year or equivalent over the period of candidature.

International Engagement

Monash University is Australia’s truly international university with campuses in Asia, Europe and Africa, with seven formal alumni networks in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand and the United Kingdom. The Faculty of Arts draws students from all over the world and offers a postgraduate research program to prepare students for effective international engagement.

Excellent Library Facilities

Monash University has one of the world’s largest collections of online databases. Students have access to an online collection of 243,838 e-books, 33,991 e-serials and 798 electronic databases. The library holds one of the largest Asian Studies collections in Australia including an impressive Indonesian collection holding some 25,000 books and over 1,500 journal and newspaper titles. The library’s Korean collection is the largest academic collection in Australia. The Chinese collection is very impressive with a focus on modern Chinese history, contemporary literature, language and politics.

The library provides services exclusively for research students. Monash employs content librarians to help students research and find library resources and acquire materials from other libraries. The university is a member of the Asian Libraries in Melbourne consortium which gives research students access to Asian material in other university libraries.
