Research Strengths of the School of Geography and Environmental Science

Tadhg Loingsigh
“Research is for the intellectually curious who push their curiosity to taking steps to figure things out, rather than just being content with being curious. Whatever route you choose, go with something you like rather than something you think will be good for your future prospects or finances.” Tadhg came from King’s College London on a scholarship. His research links two international departments, looking at climate change and the effects of desert dust blooms on the environments they land in. This research is as far reaching as evaluating the threat posed to the Great Barrier Reef by dust-borne fungal spores from Australian deserts, in the same way that Saharan dust is contributing to coral death in the Caribbean. Tadhg says that his experience at Monash has increased his exposure to environmental issues at an expert level. “I have developed a much more realistic and critical attitude towards all facets of environmental arguments, as opposed to my earlier, sometimes one-sided and naive, understanding of the complex interaction between human needs and nature.”
Geography and Environmental Science is a vibrant, research-intensive school focusing on the earth and our place on it. Areas of expertise range from dryland geomorphology to urban social change, and from sustainable futures to international development. The school provides a comprehensive guide to help students effectively plan their research program so as to complete the thesis within the candidature period.
The school also has an endowment that supports travelling expenses for students participating in fieldwork, conferences, and technical training workshops within Australia and overseas. All students are eligible to apply for funds during their candidature period.
Geography and Environmental Science awards research-related funds to students to produce a refereed publication from their postgraduate research during their period of candidature. Students can use these funds to attend conferences, technical training workshops, or for other research-related expenses.
Research in the School of Geography and Environmental Science focuses on the following areas:
Physical Geography
