International Studies
Why International Studies?
International Studies brings to life the issues and events that have shaped, and continue to shape our world. As the world globalises and nations and economies become more integrated, it is important to understand our world and the ideas and beliefs of our neighbours and trading partners. In order to compete in the international marketplace of products, ideas and knowledge we need to understand and respect the cultures and beliefs of others.
International Studies is a cross-disciplinary major which begins by examining the history of the twentieth century before moving on to study the issues facing the world in the twenty-first century. We focus on the effects of globalisation, and ask what are likely to be the outcomes of the seemingly unstoppable move towards greater integration? We look at some of the benefits of this process, including access to better and cheaper goods and services, better health, and better understandings of each others' cultures and traditions, but also the downsides such as environmental destruction, the re-emergence of aggressive nationalism and racism, and the seemingly deepening divisions between the world's 'haves' and 'have-nots'.
For second and third year students progressing to a minor or major in International Studies, we offer a diverse selection of units that challenge students to consider global issues and concerns (such as travel, religion, conflict, indigeneity, transnational culture, cities, disasters, poverty, ecology, international justice, and international development) from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. The disciplinary perspectives that inform this cross-disciplinary major include Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Drama and Theatre Studies, Film and Television Studies, Geography, History, Literature, Philosophy, and Politics.
What will students gain from International Studies?
- a knowledge of modern world history and politics
- an understanding of who we are and how we got here
- a grounding in current affairs and debates about the future
- improved oral and written communication skills, as ideas and beliefs are explained and defended
- experience in conducting research and writing tasks
