Postgraduate Research Resources and Facilities in the School of Historical Studies

Postgraduate Room

The School has a room for the use of postgraduate research students. The room has computers, printers, a text and image scanner and ergonomic desks and chairs. The computers were recently updated. The general office will supply printer cartridges and paper. The room is available for use by all postgraduate research students in the School: a key can be obtained from the General Office (W604).

Offices

Research students employed by the School will be provided with a desk, almost always in a shared office. These are allocated at the beginning of each semester. Given the constraints of the Menzies Building, only students who are engaged in sessional teaching or in research assistance for academic staff can be given desks.

Stationery, mail and communications

Postgraduate research students are entitled to use Monash stationery (such as letterhead and envelopes) when such use is for their research. You can also make use of the fax machine and mailing facilities for research-related purposes. Items to be mailed should be place in the mail boxes in the General Office. The General Office also houses the fax machine; please make a note of your fax in the record book provided.

Photocopying, slides, maps and photographs

As the photocopiers in the Menzies Building are normally in use for teaching or administrative purposes, the School provides rechargeable photocopying cards for photocopiers in the Matheson Library. These are available from the Graduate Administrator. The school can also cover reasonable costs for the production of slides, maps and photographs by the relevant services in Geography and Environmental Science.

Postgraduate Support Fund

The School provides financial support to postgraduate researchers. School funds prioritise activities not covered by university and faculty schemes - such as conference registrations, accommodation, interstate fieldwork and research materials - and are generally paid upon production of receipts. Each postgraduate research student can apply for up to $500 per year (or a pro rata amount if part-time) from the Postgraduate Support Fund. The Graduate Coordinator will accept applications for all relevant research purposes, for larger amounts in one year, and in cases of demonstrable need, for advances rather than retrospective funds. Please see the Graduate Administrator for the application form.

Mail box

There is a postgraduate student pigeonhole located in the Staff Room (W614). Sessional tutors and research assistants will normally receive a named pigeonhole for the duration of their contracts.

Postgraduate Information

The Graduate Administrator and the Graduate Coordinator send out information on conferences, funding opportunities and School events via email. It is university policy that mailing lists be linked to your Monash email account: please ensure that you either regularly check your Monash account, or that you have established a diversion from that account to the alternative email address you prefer to use.

Matheson Library Services

If you are requesting services for which costs are recovered, you may need a budget code and an authorised signature. If you cannot find your supervisor, please see the Graduate Administrator.

Staff Room

Postgraduate students are welcome to use the Staff Room (W614) and its facilities.

We wish our postgraduate research students to recognise the very important place they occupy in the intellectual and collegial life of the School. Please use your postgraduate representatives to convey thoughts and issues to the School as a whole, and please watch out for the invitations to seminars (including the Friday seminar series each semester), celebrations and other events that will appear in your email.

Induction Group

The School runs a year-long, informal induction seminar to which all new postgraduate researchers are invited. It covers issues such as postgraduate resources at Monash, defining a topic, writing literature reviews, thesis writing strategies, organization of material, etc.
