Historical Studies Policy Section 6.6 - Appeals process

Where a student wishes to appeal against the mark awarded for a piece of work, s/he should make a case in writing, referring to the assessment criteria. The student may requiest either that the original result be reviewed or that the piece of work be remarked. Remarking is not available for examinations.

Where a review is requested, the original piece or work will be assessed by a second marker who is informed of the original mark and of the dtudent's reasons for appeal. The final result will be decided in discussion between the two markers. In this case, no detailed comments are required from the second marker.

Where remarking is requested, the student will provide a clean copy of the piece of work. The second marker, who must be an experienced marker, will reassess the piece in line with the assessment criteria, and taking into account the student's reasons for appeal, but without knowledge of the original result. S/he will provide brief comments to the student. The second mark will become the final mark.

The Committee wished to make clear that this recommendation is intended to be a minimum, and that Schools may make more generous provision for remarking where appropriate (for example where it forms part of an assessment contract between the examiner and the student).

The policy must be clearly advertised to students in subject materials distributed at the beginning of the relevant semester. Students must be warned that both review and remarking may result in a lower mark than the one originally awarded.
