Historical Studies Policy Section 6.9 - Special Consideration

Following a review of Special Consideration by Academic Board (2/99), the following policies and changes to procedure are proposed for the faculty of Arts.

The purpose of these changes is twofold: one, to create uniformity of practice across the Faculty and two, to ensure that the process is transparent and equitable to students.

1. Applications for special consideration are to be considered equally across the entire grade distribution not just at the pass/fail boundary.

2. All students are to be informed of eligibility, potential outcomes and all of the procedures for applying for special consideration and for deferred examinations. They should be assured that their application will remain confidential and that it will be considered by the School.

3. All sensitive materials are to be treated with confidentiality and retained in a single school administrative office.

4. As a general rule, students enrolled in a subject taught by the Arts Faculty should be assessed with students in the same subject - that is, the course enrolment is not relevant to the application.

5. The Faculty Board of Examiners will delegate to each Head of School the responsibility for ensuring that all applications for special consideration have been considered by the academic units in the School.

6. The Head of School will ensure that the Faculty Board of Examiners is informed of the names of all students who have applied for special consideration and the type of special consideration granted.

7. Each School will establish appropriate mechanisms to ensure consistency and equity of treatment and report these mechanisms to the Faculty Executive.
