Economic Research

Economic research measures the economic performance of a community, and how that performance might change with new or different developments.
The economic health of a community can be reflected in a range of economic indicators - these can be as varied as building approval figures to average incomes. GRIS can access a range of indicators of this type for Gippsland or any other location in Australia. Many of these figures are published in our Shire Profiles.
In addition to records of economic indicators GRIS also conducts original research for special purposes. This research may target particular districts, population groups or businesses.

Research examples

GRIS was a key participant in a major study of the economic impact of industry restructure within the Latrobe region. This research covered the economic impact on individuals and communities over a five-year period during the 1990s.

The last comprehensive survey on industry and employment changes in the Latrobe Valley was conducted between 1985 - 1994 by Gippsland Research and Information Services (GRiS). GRiS is currently working with a cross-disciplinary research team from Monash University Gippsland 'Research Unit in Works & Communications Futures' , to investigate the nature of these changes within the region as it moves into a post-industrial climate.

Companies considering expansion into Gippsland have also approached GRIS to compile specific economic and social profiles of a potential market area. For example, a large international retail chain selling beauty products needed information on the larger towns in Gippsland. We were able to provide them with details of certain areas in Gippsland with a relatively youthful and prosperous population including a high proportion of middle-income white-collar families with teenage children – a perfect market for their products.
