Oil Production

The wealth of the Gippsland region is evident in the amount of oil and gas produced. The Longford crisis is evident in the figures for the December quarter for both oil and gas.

The Bass Strait basin continues to supply significant amounts of Australia's oil and gas. In the March quarter 2001, Gippsland produced 2,082 megalitres of crude oil, which is 26% of Australia's total production of 7,887 ML.

Gas production (naturally occurring) LPG in March 2001 was 407 megalitres in Gippsland, 42% of Australia's production of 960 ML.

Brown coal production in Victoria is dominated by the electricity generation companies in the Latrobe Valley - Hazelwood Power Corporation, Loy Yang Power Ltd, Edison Mission Energy and Yallourn Energy Ltd. Production has shown strong growth over the last four years, reflecting increased Victorian electricity sales, and most recently interstate sales. For the 1998/99 year, production peaked at 65 million tonnes, a 34.5% increase on the last SECV output in 1994/95.
