Course Information

Overview

Monash offers one journalism award, the Bachelor of Arts (Journalism), at the Caufield and Gippsland campuses. This degree contains 48 points of journalism core units.
A journalism sequence is offered in the Bachelor of Communications and the Bachelor of Arts.
A journalism specialisation is offered at the Berwick campus in the Bachelor of Communications.
Students from other degrees and other campuses may choose journalism units as electives.
Journalism units are sequential. Most, but not all, are available in OCDL mode.
The Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) contains one exclusive unit, JRN/JRN3902. Only students enrolled in the degree are permitted to enrol in JRN/JRN3902.
The Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) also contains two production units in Radio Journalism (JRN/JRN2905) and Television Journalism (JRN/JRN2906) offered at Caufield and Gippsland campuses.

On completion of a major sequence in journalism students are expected to have:

Developed literacy skills (writing, verbal, computer, visual)
Developed ability in the craft of media writing and production
Gained knowledge of legal and ethical issues
Acquired communication and negotiation skills
Gained an understanding of the role of the fourth estate in various press systems
Acquired reporting and investigative skills
Developed an awareness of the impact of changing technologies
Developed information management skills.
