2007 Journalism Study Tour

Following on from the highly successful HUMCASS, Journalism field Trip to New York City (NYC) in June/July'06, another field trip to journalism and media outlets in the UK, France and Belgium winds up this week.

BBC, Reuters News Agency and its research institute at University of Oxford, The Institute of War and Peace Reporting, The Times, Guardian, European Commission's Press Office, UNESCOs' Media Unit and Agency France Presse were just a few places journalist students visited on this year's field trip.

"From the 25th June to the 11th July 2007, students visited the world's leading governmental and most influential media outlets in the London, Brussels and Paris. It was the first of its kind in Australia and offered a comprehensive overview of the way in which global journalism operates", said journalist lecturer, Andrea Baker.

17 journalism students from Gippsland and Caulfield campus who were enrolled in JRN 3902 Applied Journalism Research Project in 2007 took part in the international field trip. The program included a series of guest lectures from working journalists and journalism academics and industry site visits.

"There were so many highlights of this study tour; it's hard to pin down a few site visits. Overall the tour allowed students to witness first-hand the machinations of international journalism within the industry and academy and at the same time presented them with a critique of the global media landscape", Ms Baker said.

An 'Ex-pat Journalism forum' held on the 26th June 2007 at Monash's London Centre was a favourite with the students. At the forum Australian journalists, currently based in London, talked about the trials and tribulations of working in the global arena. They included James Button, European correspondent The Age and Sydney Morning Herald; one of Australia's fathers of journalist, Phillip Knightly who writes for The Times; Brigid Delaney, former Sydney Morning Herald, now online editor with CNN.com and Bonnie Malkin, former Sydney Morning Herald now a reporter with The Telegraph.

Students went to Oxford University's newly opened 'Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. They also went to other universities to hear about Masters Courses, for example, City University's MA in International Journalism and the London College's MA in Fashion Journalism. As Vice Chancellor, Professor Richard Larkin's said in his vision, Engaging the World, "universities and nations can no longer afford to isolate themselves from the world" .

Students witnessed the media frenzy outside the House of Parliament when former UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair stepped down from his position on the 27th June. They also visited a diverse range of media outlets and met with at least 10 journalists who had been foreign correspondents in the UK, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. For instance, they met Robert Thomson, former Australian journalist and editor of the prestigious London newspaper, 'The Times'.

"Thomson is a rising star in UK journalism and is Rupert Murdoch's right man! Thomson is Australian, has the same birthday as Murdoch and also has a Chinese wife. Murdoch and Thomson are very alike despite the 30 year age difference. Thomson is touted to go far within News Corp", said Chris Mc Kane, assistant editor of The Times.

Field trips like this foster research-lead teaching and globally-relevant journalism education and encourages students to become transnational active players within the highly competitive media arena. As Larkins say, "We need to develop the next generation of leaders, researchers and innovators for the good of the global communities we serve" .
