Dr Barry Richardson
Senior Lecturer in Psychology
Dr Barry Richardson has taught in Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Papua New Guinea and the UK and he joined Monash Gippsland in 1993 to teach mainly research methods and perception in the Department of Psychology. He was Academic Director of Psychology on the Gippsland Campus for three years during which time he and colleagues initiated a psychology programme in Singapore, and built a reputation for research in the area of tactile perception. He left Psychology in 2001 and helped establish the Bachelor of Cognitive Science (in which he now teaches), and the Bionics and Cognitive Science Centre (BCSC) within the School of Humanities, Communications, and Social Sciences. He is currently the Acting Director of the BCSC.
Research Interests / Publications
Dr Richardson has over 50 publications, mostly in the area of perception and the use of touch (haptics) in sensory substitution. He was awarded $360,000 as one of eight successful applicants in a field of 159 applications for a Sustainable Regions Commonwealth Government grant. The grant is to conduct collaborative research with colleagues in engineering and information technology. The first research project has the aim of adding touch to vision and hearing in virtual environments so that users can feel virtual objects as well as see and hear them. Applications include alleviation of sensory impairment, teleremote surgery, training simulators, video games, and robotics. Dr Richardson's work in the area of touch has been published in journals such as Nature, Perception, Perception and Psychophysics, and Transactions of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers.
