Dr Karen Crinall

Lecturer in Social and Community Welfare

Karen is course coordinator for the Master of Human Services Management and a deputy head of the school. Prior to teaching at Monash, Karen was employed in the human services field as a women's refuge and youth worker, and manager of a crisis accommodation centre. Karen studied fine art at Caulfield Institute of Technology prior to completing a Master of Education at Deakin University in 1994. Karen was awarded a PhD by the University of Western Sydney in 2004 for her thesis titled “Imag(in)ing Women as Homeless: Re/tracing socially concerned photography”.

Karen is a Chief Investigator on an ARC Linkage Grant awarded in May 2007 with the University of Melbourne, Victoria Police, Department of Human Services, Department of Victorian Communities and the Department of Justice, titled “Family Violence Reform: Using knowledge to Develop and Integrate Policy and Practice”.

Research Interests / Publications

Karen's research interests are interdisciplinary, encompassing visual culture, visual sociology and the social sciences. Her social documentary photographs and photo-essays have been published locally and internationally. Karen regularly presents at national and international conferences, and publishes on the topics of social documentary photography and the visual representation of women, family violence and homelessness.

Karen regularly undertakes consultancy work for the Department of Human Services, Gippsland and is currently engaged in the inaugural project of the research partnership between the Department of Human Services, Gippsland and Monash University, Gippsland: The Evaluation of the Structured Approach to Student's at Risk: Pilot project.
