Research Interests / Publications
Students interested in doing postgraduate research in sociology on the following broad areas are invited to contact Lyle:
Research Interests
- Social movements, in particular the animal rights and environmental movements and other social and cultural movements such as the home-schooling movement.
- Human-animal studies which is a multi-disciplinary area of research including the disciplines of history, politics, sociology etc
- Issues associated with the school/uni to work transitions and the education of youth as students, workers and citizens.
- The social construction of deviance and social problems such as obesity and other topics of contemporary interest.
Current Medium-term Research
Life Chances
I am working on a comparative study of school to work transition processes which focuses on the experiences of senior secondary students in three different locations (local, Melbourne and the ACT); a small sample of university students at Monash Gippsland is also included. The research will contribute to an understanding of the factors which shape the life chances of young people in Australia as students, workers and citizens.
The Pleasures / Pains of the PhDs
I am planning an anthology of essays based on recently completed PhD dissertations by staff and students in a selection of disciplines in the Faculty of Arts. The collection is designed to (1) promote the diversity of disciplines in the Faculty and HUMCASS and to (2) provide prospective and current honours, masters and PhD students especially, with a helpful and perhaps inspirational guide to advanced study.
The Green Movement
I am working on a book Natural Allies: Social Movements in Defence of Nature . The research focuses on conscience movements (eg eco feminism, new agrarian movements such as organic farming, the anti-GM food and slow food movements) and sustainability movements (eg ecological restoration, environmental justice, eco-city initiatives including ecotourism).
Social Movements
Also in the pipeline is an edited book on a variety of social movements in Australia and elsewhere.
