Dr Mark Symmons

Lecturer in Cognitive Science

Mark completed an MSc and a PhD at Monash Gippsland in the area of touch in virtual reality, after completing an undergraduate degree in physics, also at the Gippsland campus. He took up a full time lecturer position teaching in the Cognitive Science and Psychological Studies programs in 2005. Mark has also worked for a number of years as a Research Fellow at the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), conducting research in a wide range of road safety and driver behaviour areas.

Research Interests / Publications

Mark has been an author of over 50 publications since 2000, 30 of them peer-reviewed. His publications are evenly split between haptics (or touch) with a particular interest in virtual reality, and various areas of road safety. Mark's road safety publications are mainly in the areas of heavy vehicles, fleets, motorcyclists, mobile phones, and the trade-off between road safety & the environment. Mark has been the recipient of a number of small to medium internal and external research grants since 2005.
