Dr Olga Bursian

Lecturer, Social and Community Welfare

Olga Bursian has social work undergraduate and post graduate qualifications. Her career spanned direct service, social policy development, research and advocacy, management, community development and cross cultural training. Experience in working with Commonwealth and State government departments (Department of Social Security Darwin; Department of Human Services managing statewide programs), research institutes (Brotherhood of St Laurence Social Policy & Research Centre), community based agencies (Migrant Resource Centre) as well as teaching social work at RMIT, prior to her current position at Monash. She teaches the history of the welfare state in SCW 1302 Governing Inequality, SCW 2312 Welfare Law, Rights and Ethics and SCW 2310 Social Policy.

Research Interests / Publications

Her Master of Social Work policy analysis thesis was “ The Formation of the Youth Guarantee”, a Victorian Cain Labor Government education, employment and training initiative for young people . Her Phd “Uncovering the Agency of Migrant Women: Connecting with Australian Public Infrastructure” was based on 30 in-depth interviews with women from 5 non-Western regions of the world. Exploring women's capacities to creatively rebuild life included tracing the influence of public services and policies available on the basis of citizenship rights over the research period of 1976-1999.

Research interests include multiculturalism and social cohesion, comparative welfare state regimes, labour market issues, governance and policies for democratic citizenship, youth and labour markets, post-colonial theory; feminist standpoint theory, subjugated knowledges, cross cultural epistemology and ontology, community development, decolonising research methods.
