Indonesian Off-campus Language Learning

On this page:

Introduction

Off-campus language learning is about being able to study the language and culture of Indonesia when and where it best suits you. It requires personal discipline and a regular routine but providing you make the connections with your fellow students, your tutor and the Indonesian community around you there is no reason for not making equal progress with those studying on-campus.

Indonesian is currently the only off-campus language and culture program at Monash University. It can be taken from anywhere in Australia or overseas and can be combined with in-country study to provide a unique learning experience. Indonesian off-campus units can be taken as an elective, as a major in a Bachelor of Arts, as a Diploma of Languages or as a Graduate Diploma of Languages providing you already have an undergraduate degree.

Who studies off-campus?

Off-campus learning has been developed for people who are interested in developing their skills in language and cross cultural communication but are unable to attend the standard pattern of on-campus lectures and tutorials. It allows you to incorporate study into your weekly work or study pattern while still receiving face-to-face support via weekend
workshops, consultations with your tutor, and in-country study. Examples of past student groups include:

How will my study be supported?

Off-campus learning is not a do-it-yourself language program. While at Monash you will have access to on-line facilities such as Monash’s extensive library collection either through the post, on-campus visits or via the growing collection of fully digitized journals and books.

Most importantly you will have access to a tutor which you can visit on-campus or contact via phone, chat-line, or email. Each unit includes the following:

Furthermore, you will receive invitations to cultural events and if you live in Victoria be able to participate in our exchange program with Indonesian students studying on the various Monash campuses. Where possible we will also assist students interstate and overseas to find Indonesian peer tutors.
