Biography

I undertook undergraduate studies at the Australian National University, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana in Salatiga, Central Java and Monash University gaining a BA (Hons) in Anthropology and Indonesian Studies in 1988. In 1989 I began a PhD in the Department of Indonesian and Chinese Studies at Monash, which involved two years of fieldwork in Bali. My thesis is an ethnographic study of the College of Indonesian Arts, Denpasar. In particular, I examine the College and the processes of institutionalisation and bureaucratisation within the wider context of nationalism, the cultural politics of the New Order State and the incorporation of Bali into the nation-state of Indonesia. As part of my research in Bali I also studied topeng (mask dancing) with I Ketut Kantor in Batuan. I am engaged in ongoing research on several Balinese related topics, and am the Australian representative of the ARTI Foundation.

Since 1994 I have been lecturing in the Anthropology program and supervising Honours, MA and PhD students. I currently hold a joint appointment in the Anthropology Program (School of Political & Social Inquiry) and the Indonesian Studies Program (School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics).

Research interests

I am keen to supervise students on the following topics:

Current research

In 1st semester 2003 I spent part of my study leave at The International Institute for Asian Studies(IIAS) in Leiden, the Netherlands. During the time there I worked on a number of projects, including one on conflict in Bali, and another investigating the need for a Balinese Performing Arts archive. I'm in the process of reworking material from my research on STSI (now ISI) in light of developments since 1998 and the publication of several recent books on Balinese Performing Arts. I'm also thinking about a project focussed on the the Dutch documentary film-maker Joris Ivens and the making of Indonesia Calling.
