Biography

Johan Lidberg joined the journalism program at Monash in 2010.  He has taught journalism since 1999.  Before the move to Monash, he was Academic Chair of Journalism at Murdoch University in Perth.

He has worked in print and broadcast journalism, most recently for the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation (SR) as a senior political reporter. He has previously held positions at SR as reporter, producer, presenter, foreign correspondent and news editor.

Johan has also served two stints in the United Nations Peace Keeping forces:  in the United Nations Force in Cyprus, UNFICYP, in 1987 and as a Press and Information Officer with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, in 1992-1993 in Lebanon.

Research

Johan's main research area is Freedom of Information and its impact on journalistic practice.  His research projects have laid the foundation for the first International Freedom of Information Index, ranking a number of FOI regimes according to how well they work in practice.  He was consulted by the federal government during the reform process of federal FOI in Australia and contributed to a senate hearing on the new legislation.

His secondary research area is the reporting and coverage of climate change and his third area of interest is the ethical self-regulation system governing the journalism industry.

Examples of other research areas where he will supervise postgraduate students:

  • public broadcasting
  • citizen journalism
  • the role of journalism in society
  • journalism and democracy
  • business reporting
  • environmental reporting
  • political reporting
  • reporting war and conflict

Johan's research blog can be found here.

Current Research Projects

Assessment of the reformed and amended federal FOI system in Australia.  The amended federal FOI Act and the new Information Commissioner Act will be active from November 2010.  Will they deliver what they promise? Pro-active disclosure of government-held information and greater public access to information held by government agencies?

A Social Contract for Journalism -- how can public trust in journalism be re-built?  Is a re-vamp of the current self-regulation system for ethics in journalism one way?
