General Information

A Brief Introduction

This site is intended for use by beginning level students of Japanese at Monash University in Australia. However, it is also available for general use.

The language exercises found in this site have been developed as supplements to the material delivered during classes. The aim of this site is to consolidate and extend the learning done during class. The site is not intended as a separate Japanese course.

The exercises presented in this site relate to the corresponding lessons in Tomoda, T. and May, B. (1996) Interactive Japanese, Book 1. Tokyo: Kodansha International.

This site also includes exercises that require access to other web sites and links to web sites of use to beginners level students of Japanese language.

Many of the exercises are presented in romanized and Japanese script versions. However, unless your computer has the capacity to display Japanese text, you will find that some of the exercises do not function completely.

How to Use This Site (system requirements)

1) This site has been developed with and tested on Windows 2000 (Windows 98) with Internet Explorer 5.5 & Netscape Communicator 4.75 (or greater), however the site is optimized for Internet Explorer 5.5 with the recommended plug-ins etc. mentioned below. All attempts have been made to make this site viewable in a broad range of browsers, however, full functionality can only be assured for those systems and browsers mentioned above.

2) You will need a JavaScript 1.2 capable browser for all the interactive exercises in the site. The browsers mentioned above are JavaScript 1.2 capable.

If you see a green tick in the table cell to the right of this text then you have a functional JavaScript enabled browser. If not, then either; you have JavaScript disabled or you do not have a JavaScript capable browser.

3) This site uses Japanese characters extensively and some sections of the site give you the option to type Japanese. Your browser/operating system will need to have Japanese language support installed to view and / or type Japanese Characters. We recommend using the Japanese Language support built into Windows 2000* or the support that can be added to Internet Explorer 5.5** for Windows 98.

* In Windows 2000 language support for Japanese is built into the operating system. Search your Windows 2000 help system for the phrase "install additional languages" to find out more about this function.

** In Internet Explorer 5.x on Windows 95/98 the Japanese language support and Global IME (Input Method Editor - required to type Japanese) can be installed from the Windows Update page on the Internet.

4) Audio in this site is provided in the RealAudio format. The browsers recommended above usually have the RealAudio player included with them, however, you can also get the free RealPlayer from the Real.com web site.
