Biography
I started teaching Japanese as a part-time instructor at the Ajia Fukushi Kyoiku Zaidan, Nanmin Jigyoo Honbu, Himeji Teijuu Sokushin Sentaa (Himeji Resettlement Promotion Centre, Japan). As I enjoyed teaching there and learned a lot from the students, I decided to pursue further study in teaching Japanese as a second/foreign language. After completion of a one-year intensive training course at Kokuritsu Kokugo Kenkyuusho (the National Language Research Institute, Japan), I taught Japanese as a part-time lecturer at Tokyo Kokusai Daigaku (Tokyo International University). I then studied at the Tsukuba Daigaku, Chiiki Kenkyuu-ka (Department of Area Studies, Tsukuba University) and completed a Master of International Affairs.
After graduating with a Masters Degree, I came to Melbourne to teach at Monash. Since joining Monash University, I have taught and coordinated various language courses from the beginner level to the most advanced level. The Department sent me to Chiba University in Japan for six months in 1995 and also in 1996 with Monash Honours students who went to Japan as a part of their Honours program. I was there not only as a Japanese language teacher but also as a study abroad advisor, and advised the students on their homestays, research in Japan and studies at a Japanese university. It was a very exciting time when the Japanese government had just introduced the Short-term Exchange Promotion Program and the number of Japanese universities with which Monash had exchange agreements increased rapidly. I enjoyed working at the forefront of study abroad and especially enjoyed having close contact with the Honours students and other Monash students in Japan.
I have been involved in various course development projects including the publication of Monash original textbooks, Interacting with the Japanese: a comprehensive communication course, Books 1 and 2 in the early 1990s; and Current Issues in the Japanese Media (Japanese 11), which was a part of a GOLD (Global Online Learning Development) Project in 2002-2003.
While I was working for Monash, I completed my PhD under the supervision of Professor Simon Marginson of the Faculty of Education. The title of my thesis is Globalisation and the internationalization of universities in Japan: Issues of identity in student exchange. Now I combine my research interest with administrative work, and I am in charge of sending Monash students to Japanese partner universities.

Research interests
My initial research interest was in testing, and especially in aptitude tests, and I completed a study on the possibilities of an aptitude test for placement of students without any previous study of the language. My research interests then shifted to the cognitive aspects of comprehension and my research project for my Masters thesis focused on factors that influence the listening comprehension of learners of Japanese. The focus was not on linguistic knowledge but on background knowledge about the content of materials.
After I started teaching at Monash, I became interested in the acquisition of communicative competence by high school exchange students who have stayed in Japan for more than ten months. I have completed several research projects in this field, such as a longitudinal study of the acquisition of communicative competence by former high school exchange students, and the characteristics of their spoken Japanese. With the experience of looking after study abroad students, I extended my research interests to the cultural understanding of exchange students at the tertiary level and to broader issues of study abroad.
In my PhD project, I investigated the Japanese policies towards international students and identity issues of Australian exchange students at Japanese universities. My current research interest includes issues of identity in relation to study abroad, internationalization of universities, and intercultural communication.
I have also worked for other projects, which are directly related to language teaching. They include content- based advanced language teaching and development of on-line activities and multimedia resources for Japanese language teaching.
