Japanese for background speakers at Monash University
The Japanese program at Monash University is offering a new Japanese course for background/heritage speakers of Japanese (ATS1153/ATS1154). These units can be taken either as first year university units OR as an Enhancement course during Year 12.

Background of students
- Students who have a home background in Japanese OR
- Students who have completed two or more years of formal education in Japan, or else can demonstrate equivalent competence
Prerequisites
- Completion of units 3 and 4 (Japanese L2) in Year 11 with a high level of competence OR
- Concurrent enrolment in units 3 and 4 in Year 12 (Japanese L2) with strong language competence OR
- Demonstration of equivalent competence to units 3 and 4 in a placement test.
*All applicants will be individually assessed to ensure they are appropriately placed in this course.
Aims of the course
- To expand students’ knowledge of the Japanese language and culture;
- To equip students to be able to adapt their language skills to their social, intellectual and vocational activities in both Japanese and Australian societies; and,
- To assist students to develop their critical awareness of identity and other topics relating to sociocultural knowledge of the Japanese language and Japan.
