Jewish Educators Program
Course Convenor: Paul ForgaszThis innovative program is a joint initiative of the ACJC and the Monash Faculty of Education in consultation with the Hebrew University's Melton Centre of Jewish Education in the Diaspora. The program strives to create Jewish educational excellence in Australia by partnering with the network of Jewish day-schools locally and nationally to realize the following aims:
- Create a new cadre of well-trained Jewish teachers
- To professionally develop existing teachers toward excellence
- To train educators to understand new currents in Jewish educational philosophy and practice
Judaic Scholars Teaching Fellowship
'Judaic Scholars' will be the leading Jewish studies teachers of the future. This initiative awards five prestigious fellowships each year for students to undertake a two year program of study combining a Graduate Diploma of Education with a Masters in Jewish Studies. The program is designed to train students in advanced study of Jewish texts, language, and critical thinking in preparation for becoming the elite cadre of Jewish educators in Australia.'Judaic Scholars' will be mentored through the two year program by three partnering institutions - the ACJC, the Monash Faculty of Education, and the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University.
The Fellowship is awarded by a board of expert educators who will assess students’ capacity to be a Judaic Scholar. Students must have completed a B.A or equivalent degree and must be prepared to commit themselves to two years of full-time study, followed by a three year commitment to work as a Judaic Scholar at an Australian Jewish dayschool. Students who have already completed a four year B.Ed. or a Grad.Dip.Ed. can apply for a one year fellowship.
The Judaic Scholars Teaching Fellowship offers the following:
- Payment of fees to undertake a Graduate Diploma of Education and a Masters in Jewish Studies at Monash University
- Support for travel to Israel to undertake an intensive period of study over the winter or summer break at an approved Israeli institution
- A stipend for the two years of study
'Judaic Scholars' alumni will be offered ongoing professional development through the Monash Jewish Educators Program.
