Undergraduate Studies in the Australian Centre for the Study of Jewish Civilisation

Designing a Jewish Civilisation Course of Study

The Centre offers the choice of pursuing a major sequence or a minor sequence in Jewish Studies. You may also undertake single subjects and combine them with your own degree.

One of the advantages of taking subjects offered by the ACJC is that you can enjoy a great deal of flexibility concerning the way you can design your course.

You may decide to specialize in a particular discipline or area of study. The opportunities to do so are many and varied. For example, you can put together a coherent course of study in Jewish history , stretching from the biblical, through the medieval and into the modern period. Alternatively, you might be more interested in focusing on Jewish thought, philosophy, law and theology. (If this is your interest, you can also combine some of the subjects offered by the Centre for the Study of Religion and Theology). You can also study various aspects of the contemporary Jewish world. Or you may have an inclination towards language and literature , in which case you have the opportunity to study Hebrew and Yiddish.

If you do not wish to specialize in a particular area of study, then you have the option of putting together a more eclectic and general program of study. If you go down this track, you can put together a pot-pourri of courses and, during each semester, get a taste of a different area of Jewish study, be it ancient or modern. In this way, you can develop a more general knowledge and overview of Jewish history, thought and culture.

For more information in designing your own course of study, contact either Mr. Paul Forgasz on 9905 2160 or Prof. Andrew Markus on 9905 2200.
