5. Information on Melbourne
Melbourne, the capital of the state of Victoria was home for the indigenous population prior to the white Europeans who settled here in 1835. Melbourne has its magnificent architecture, opulent mansions and gracious parks thanks to a major goldrush in 1848 which extended for over 40 years. Established as the commercial headquarters and seat of government, Melbourne was the birthplace of Australian Federation. It relinquished the role of government seat to Canberra in 1927. Melbourne has a population of approximately 3.32 million. The Australian Dollar ($AUD) is a decimal currency with units in dollars and cents.
Tipping is not required or expected in Australia - this includes taxis. However, if you feel you have been given superior service, a gratuity would be welcome. In that case, ten per cent of the bill in restaurants is considered correct. Tourist Information
