| Students who have studied little or no Korean would normally enrol in KOR1010 Korean 1 and KOR1020 Korean 2. If you are a beginner in studying Korean, you do not need to sit for a placement test. However, you must take the test if you have studied Korean before. Please contact Younga Cho for the placement test. | |||
Korean Language
The Korean studies program is designed for students who wish to acquire Korean language skills and understand Korean culture and society.
Korean language teaching at Monash incorporates interactive and online resources to enhance learning and bring Korean culture to the classroom.
Introducing Hangul, the Korean phonetic writing system, enables students to type in Korean from the beginner level. Higher-level students are strongly encouraged to engage in online discussion in Korean.
Major or Minor in Korean
A major in Korean requires 48 points of study over 3 year levels (12 points in first year, 12 points in second year, 24 points in third year). The actual units taken will vary according to the first year entry level. Normally, students take 6 sequential core Korean units, and two electives. It is possible to replace core units with study abroad units, and in some circumstances to replace a unit with an additional Korean Studies elective – for further details see the ‘Areas of Study’ regulations on the website or consult with staff.
A minor in Korean requires EITHER 24 points of core language units OR 18 points of core language units plus one second-year or third-year level elective (language elective or Korean/Asian studies). A minor can be made up of either a first year and second year sequence, or a second and third year sequence.
Korean and Asian Studies
All Korean language students are encouraged to enrol in Asian Studies units. These units have no Korean language prerequisites. Units can be taken as part of the Korean language major, or for a separate major or minor in Asian Studies.
Core Units
Core units take one semester to complete, and are each worth 6 points.
The first digit of the unit code indicates the year level and the second and third digits the proficiency level (e.g. KOR1010 – first year, beginners – Korean 1).
All unit versions of the same proficiency level have the same title regardless of year level, (e.g. Korean 5 has three different unit codes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year: KOR1050, KOR2050 and KOR3050).
Korean 1, 3, 5 are offered in semester 1 and Korean 2, 4, 6 are offered in semester 2.
Note that Study Abroad and elective units do not conform to this system.
Course Fees
Information about course fees can be found on the University's Fees page.
Scholarships and Prizes
There will be prizes for the students who achieve the highest academic standard in Korean units.
In addition to these Monash prizes, the Korean studies program nominates one or two first year students each year for the AAA award, offered by the Australian-Asian Association of Victoria.
A number of organisations also offer scholarships. Students who studied Korean at Monash have been awarded following scholarships:
Korea Foundation Fellowship for Korean Language Training, Korea Foundation Fellowship for Graduate Studies, National Institute for International Education Development scholarship, and The Academy of Korean Studies Cultural Program for Foreign Students and Scholars in Korean Studies.
Non-Arts &/or Non-Monash Students
The Diploma in Languages is an undergraduate qualification that permits students from faculties other than Arts to complete a language major while studying for their primary undergraduate degree.
Further information can be found on the University's Course Finder.
Non-Monash students are able to take Korean as single units or through cross-institutional study.
Library
The Korean Collection in the Library is the largest academic Korean collection in Australia. The collection focus is on social sciences, particularly economics and politics, and on the history, language, architecture and music of Korea. The collection includes many Korean videos and DVDs.
