French Studies Community Engagement
Professor Brian Nelson was the founding President of the Australian Society for French Studies. He works in liaison with the Victorian Department of Education & Training on policy issues concerning languages. He represents the Faculty of Arts on the Joint Education Systems and Tertiary Institutions LOTE Committee (JESTILC).
Philip Anderson is currently Secretary of the Australian Society for French Studies and represents the program on the Victorian/French Joint Standing Committee on Educational Cooperation. He also serves on the committee of the Alliance Franaise de Melbourne, and is a member of the Victorian Department of Education & Training selection panel for the French Teacher of the Year award.
Members of the program participate in in-service training for the Association of French Teachers of Victoria: Philip Anderson offered two training sessions on French cinema at the AFTV annual conference and in the AFTV training program. Patrick Durel and Sally Staddon have participated in the Victorian Department of Education & Training's language teachers' in-service training program. The program participates in the primary and secondary teachers' upgrade courses sponsored by the Victorian Department of Education & Training. The program offers several workshops a year for secondary students (Years 11 and 12) preparing for the VCE. Occasional lectures on French culture and society are given by members of the program (e.g. recently to the Australian Institute for International Relations and the Lyceum Club).
