Monash Language students continue to excel

The German Studies Program is delighted to announce the successful completion of the 2009 DAAD scholarship round. The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst - DAAD) has announced that Monash German Studies students have been awarded a total of fourteen scholarships in the two categories open to undergraduate students. “A Peculiar Language” Early Australian English and Beyond

In the second LASC Annual Lecture, Professor Kate Burridge explores the characteristics of early Australian English based on evidence from 19th century police reports. Australian English is a 'melting pot' of linguistic inputs, from the influence of dialects from southeast England, Ireland and Scotland in early settlements, to more recent diversity from Aboriginal English and migrant Englishes. This talk discusses the development of Australian English as a distinctive and diverse language. Find out more.

What is Honours?

Honours is a fourth year of study which follows the completion of the normal requirements of the Bachelor of Arts pass degree. The Honours program offers an opportunity for more specialised, advanced work in either one or two chosen disciplines.

Honours is a full one-year program of study. Students may choose either (i) to do one semester's work in-country, with the second semester's work being done at Monash, or (ii) to do the entire program at Monash. The program may also be done part-time over two years, which often enhances extended overseas study in-country. Fifty percent of the program must be done in the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics on Clayton Campus.

The Honours program is structured around 48 points of credit. All students will be required to complete an Honours dissertation of approximately 15,000 to 18,000 words (worth 50 percent or 24 points of the overall assessment). The other 50 percent of assessment will consist of coursework at an advanced level. The dissertation can be written in either English, or the target language, although they will be assessed differently. For more information please refer to the dissertation guidelines.

What disciplines are available for Honours?

The School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics offers a wide range of fourth year Honours subjects including, Chinese, English as an International Language, European Studies, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Linguistics, Slavic, Spanish, Translation and Interpreting Studies, and Ukrainian.

Can Honours students undertake study abroad?

Monash University has exchange agreements with several universities in China, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, France, Italy, Spain and Germany.

How do I know if I should apply for Honours?

Applicants to the Honours program must have completed 36 points of the relevant subjects in their language major with an average grade of 70 percent or better for 4 subjects (24 points), consisting of 3 third-year subjects and one second- or third-year subject. Eighteen of the 24 points must be at third-year level.

When should I apply for Honours?

Entry into Honours is normally at the commencement of the academic year. Mid-year entry into Honours may be offered depending on the availability of places.

Students intending to undertake Honours in 2009 should complete the application form available from the Arts Faculty Office, and can be downloaded from
http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/future/apps-honours.php

Application forms must be lodged at the Coursework/Faculty Office by the last Friday in June for 2009 mid-year entry, or the last Friday in November for study commencing in 2010.

Once you have lodged your application form with the Faculty Coursework Office, you should download and complete the LCL Honours Application Form, and submit it to the Honours Officer (Room S419) by July 10, 2009 for mid-year enty, or December 15 for study commencing in 2010.
