The School of Languages , Cultures and Linguistics runs a series of Honours workshops to help students write up their dissertation.
Workshops scheduled for 2008 were:
- Endnote
Wednesday March 26, Matheson Library, 2-4pm
This workshop will give you an introduction to using Endnote in Microsoft Word.
- Formatting with Microsoft Word
Tuesday April1, 2-3pm, S306 (Building 11)
You will learn about formatting using features of Microsoft Word, such as styles, automatic example, table and section numbering, cross-referencing, and lots, lots more.
- Overcoming Writer's Block: A workshop on strategies for conquering thesis anxiety
Wednesday April 23, 2-3pm, W216 (Building 11)
This workshop is designed to help you cope with some of the stresses and anxieties of writing a thesis. It will give you strategies to deal with the feeling of being overwhelmed by the job ahead, and will help you to conquer the biggest problem that faces students approaching a large written piece: writer's block. Please come to the workshop with a pen, paper, and an open mind.
- Writing a good thesis: Focusing on the mechanics of writing and presentation
Friday May 16, 10.00am-12noon, Theatre L4, Building 12
When you are told that examiners want 'coherent arguments', 'good organisation', 'clear structure', 'an engaging thesis', do you know what this means? And more importantly, do you know how to apply this to your writing?
In this workshop, you learn about practical pointers on the 'craft' of writing an Honours thesis. In particular we will focus on:- writing the perfect introduction: make your examiner (or other readers) confident that it is worth reading the rest of the thesis
- dealing with a large body of text
- highlighting your argument (chapters, sections, paragraphs)
- coherence (real, or pretend)
- editing: how do you do it?
