German Students Succeed in 2009 DAAD Scholarship Round
The German Studies Program is delighted to announce the successful completion of the 2009 DAAD scholarship round. The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst - DAAD) has announced that Monash German Studies students have been awarded a total of fourteen scholarships in the two categories open to undergraduate students. The Korea Foundation 2010 Fellowship for Field Research
Thomas Chase has been selected for The Korea Foundation 2010 Fellowship for Field Research program. This program is designed to support scholars of Korean studies undertaking in-country research and covers all related costs during the fieldwork period. Thomas will be conducting fieldwork in Korea as part of his research into the Internet and political communication in Korea. Congratulations Tom, well done.
Japanese Video Festival

Bridge to China
Monash students Katie Murphy and Lloyd Bradbury have received scholarships to study in China for their performance at the recent Chinese Bridge competition held by the Chinese Government in Changsha, Hunan Province. Find out more.

The German Academic Exchange Service has awarded no fewer than eight of our students of German 6-week intensive course scholarships tenurable in Germany during January and February 2010.
Embassy of Japan Study Tour Awarded to Five Students of Japanese
Congratulations to five Japanese Language students who have been selected to participate in a study tour program to be held in early December. All the costs (except for pocket money) will be borne by the Embassy and they will visit prominent industries and Ritsumeikan University in Beppu in Kyushu where they can enjoy hot spars as well as attending a series of lectures given by the leaders of Japanese politics and economy.

- Nicholas Papadopulos (Japanese 6), and
- Jessica Smith (Japanese 6)
Italian Language Student Wins Award for Composition
Lauren Wilson, a third-year student in the Italian Studies program who commenced her encounter with Italian at Monash at the beginners' level, has been awarded the Victorian Multicultural Commission Prize for a composition in Italian.
The Prize is conferred by the A.L.I.A.S. (Accademia Letteraria Italo Australiana Scrittori).
Indonesian Language Students Selected for Youth Exchange Program
Three students of the Indonesian Studies Program have been selected for the Australia-Indonesia Youth exchange Program (AIYEP) for 2009/2010.
They are Brett Ambrse, Colin Dunlop and Sam Hales.
Brett, Colin and Sam will leave with a small group of Australians representing both tertiary institutions and professional fields throughout Australia on a two month visit to Indonesia. The program is sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Australian Indonesian Institute and its alumni have become an important network of professionals working in Australia and Indonesia.
Recognition of Excellence in Asian Languages
Congratulations to four of our students who were awarded Australian-Asian Association of Victoria Asian Language Awards for 2009:
- Chinese: Tallon Mason-Kaine
- Indonesian: Eleanor Demarzi
- Japanese: Lauren van der Kraan
- Korean: Nicholas Williams
Each Victorian university teaching an Asian language is invited to nominate its top first year language students. The awards are also open to non-background students who have studied the language at VCE-level. In addition to a monetary prize and letter of commendation, the award includes honorary membership of the Association for one year. Students not only receive recognition for their achievement but also have the opportunity to attend functions and expand their opportunities by networking with other students and young professionals having a connection with or interest in Asia.
Korean Language Students’ Succeed
Hoi Lam Tou recently won the annual Monash University Cha Eunhee Prize. This prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest aggregate mark in ‘Korean 1’ and continues to study ‘Korean 2’ in second semester, 2009. Her prize was an electronic dictionary. Congratulations Hoi Lam, well done.
Erin Fitzgerald is the only student in Australia this year that was successful in her application for a scholarship from the Korean Government through the National Institute for International Education. The NIIE invite applications for the Graduate Scholarship Program in Korea from 107 countries. Erin’s scholarship will cover her study, her airfares, a monthly allowance as well as other many other benefits. The course will cover 1 year of a Korean language course and 2 years postgraduate course. Congratulations Erin, a fantastic achievement.
Jodie Dybing has been successful in receiving a scholarship from the Academy of Korean Studies, through its 2009 Cultural Program for Foreigners. Jodie’s scholarship covers a four week program at their academy in Bundang South Korea. Jodie says her days include Korean language classes in the morning, then lunch, followed by a lecture on the history and culture of Korea and then perhaps an activity such as calligraphy or samulnori. Regular field trips are also part of the program. Congratulations Jodie, well done.

State and National Japanese Speech Contest - Success for Monash Students
Congratulations to our students for their success in the 39th Annual Japanese Speech Contest, Victorian State Final. We particularly congratulate Lance Truong, who has gone on to win First Prize in the Open Division of the National Japanese Speech Contest. Find out more.
Monash Students of Chinese Win Prestigeous Awards in China
Congratulations to Monash students Kristian Rodd and James Kett, who have both received scholarships to study in China for their performance at the recent final of the Chinese Bridge competition held in China. 110 competitors from 55 countries participated in a demanding final round, which required students to complete a range of tasks in Chinese language including written examinations, interviews, artistic performances, speeches, role-playing and debates.
