Welcome to the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics (LCL)
The School of Languages Cultures and Linguistics (LCL) at Monash takes pride in offering courses that will create what the United Nations, in one of its documents, has called ‘genuine multilingualism’: teaching students to comprehend language and culture, and understand these concepts more deeply by exploring the connection and movement between the native and foreign tongue. This goal is obtained by offering several flexible courses in languages, linguistics, international literatures and translating and interpreting.
As well as university-based education, great importance is given to Community Engagement. There are many programs within the School that have very extensive and diverse involvement with the communities they serve and with whom they work, including language enhancement for secondary school teachers and courses offered to VCE students.
LCL also has many international activities. Students benefit from exchange and study abroad, including in-country programs. The School has been the recipient of several international grants and host to a variety of visiting scholars from all over the world.
LCL is continually expanding and developing within Monash, and continues to contribute valuable research for the academic world of language and culture. Members of the School are affiliated with several research groups and centres: the Monash EU and European Studies Centre, the Japanese Studies Centre, the Language and Society Centre, the Literature Research Unit.
In a world of limitless communication, graduates of LCL will find themselves qualified for work in a multitude of sectors - international relations and diplomacy, international trade and banking, business, the arts, publishing and the media, law, medicine, engineering, collaborative scientific research, and education. For a multicultural country such as Australia, knowledge of another language of culture provides opportunities for almost any field.
