1. Course outline and structure

The course seeks to develop students' skills in translation to and from English and another language, and their awareness of practical and theoretical approaches to translation and translation studies. The main languages available are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Other languages may be available depending on student numbers. Students will be given a foundation in theories of translation and will also receive training in research on translation studies.

Structure:

Students complete 48 points, comprising four 12-point units.

Requirements
Semester one
TRN4030 Introduction to interpreting and translation studies (12 points)
TRN4040 Translation 1: Discourse analysis (12 points)
Semester two
TRN4050 Translation 2: Language for special purposes
TRN5202 Minor translation project (12 points)

Alternative exit(s)
After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a graduate certificate.

Articulation:
Students require a credit average in the graduate diploma program to transfer to the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies by Coursework (Translation stream only)

9. Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for entry is a Bachelor degree with a major in a language (post-year 12 study). Applicants who do not have a language major, should have a level of language proficiency at least equivalent of three years of tertiary study (post-year 12 study).

10. English Language Requirements

Where English is the foreign language, the student is required to have a TOEFL score of 600 (and a score of at least 5 in TWE) or IELTS of 7 overall (including 7 for writing and at least a 6 for each band).
