Monash Language students continue to excel

The German Studies Program is delighted to announce the successful completion of the 2009 DAAD scholarship round. The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst - DAAD) has announced that Monash German Studies students have been awarded a total of fourteen scholarships in the two categories open to undergraduate students. Other recent awards include: Korea Foundation 2010 Fellowship for Field Research; Japanese Video Festival Contest 2009; Australian-Asian Language Awards; Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program Scholarships; Victorian Multicultural Commission Prize for a composition in Italian; Embassy of Japan Study Tour Scholarships; German Academic Exchange Service intensive course scholarships; and Chinese Bridge Scholarships. “A Peculiar Language” Early Australian English and Beyond

In the second LASC Annual Lecture, Professor Kate Burridge explores the characteristics of early Australian English based on evidence from 19th century police reports. Australian English is a 'melting pot' of linguistic inputs, from the influence of dialects from southeast England, Ireland and Scotland in early settlements, to more recent diversity from Aboriginal English and migrant Englishes. This talk discusses the development of Australian English as a distinctive and diverse language. Find out more.
