Course overview
The Honours program is a one-year full-time course. It is possible to study the program part time over two years. Honours students complete a total of 48 credit points: the thesis (about 15,000 to 18,000-words) worth 24 points and two 12-point coursework units.
Prerequisites
The minimum requirement for admission to fourth year honours is completion of a major sequence in Linguistics with at least distinction grades (70% or better).

Minor thesis, 24 points (or 12 &12 points), Semester 1 and/or
2
AND - LIN4740 Linguistic theory, 12 points, Semester 1
- LIN4720
Special topics in linguistics, 12 points, preferably Semester 1
OR - LIN4990 Linguistics Study Abroad Program, Semester 1
- LIN4660 Minor thesis, 24 points, Semester 2
Students enrolled in the Honours Program are expected to participate in the following activities which will assist the successful completion of their thesis:
- A series of meetings (approximately once per month) in which students are introduced to various aspects of linguistic research methodology. Later meetings will include presentation and discussion of your own research design, progress and results with fellow students and supervisors.
- Regular participation in the Linguistics Program seminars. These cover a wide variety of topics and many are presented by visiting scholars of international standing.
Suggested Honours Topics
Applicants are encouraged to develop their own ideas for Honours topics. But we have also listed some topic areas and suggestions by each staff member which they would be interested to supervise. If you are interested in any of the topic areas listed here please contact the potential supervisor for a chat about how to develop a specific topic.
Scholarships
Students enrolling into Honours are automatically considered for the Faculty of Arts Honours Scholarships. Don’t wait with you application until after you get the results for you degree; you will miss the deadline.
Contact the Linguistics Honours Convenor for a chat. If you want to work with a specific supervisor contact them to talk about topic areas.

Fill in the form and get the signature of the Linguistics Honours Convenor. They will only sign off on your form if you have defined a thesis topic or topic area and a staff member has agreed to supervise you.
Submit your signed form to the Arts Faculty Office (1st floor West, Menzies Bld.)
Study abroad
Monash University has exchange agreements with prominent universities world wide, including the US, Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden.
In semester 1, Honours students may study at a Linguistics Department of one of these universities and complete the required 24 points of coursework. The choice of host university and the coursework to be completed there need to be approved by the Linguistics Honours Coordinator.

Postgraduate studies
Students who complete Honours in Linguistics may proceed to the Masters program. Students achieving a high class of Honours may proceed directly to the Ph.D. program in Linguistics.
