The part played by the Linguistics Program at Monash, Clayton
The Program of Linguistics at Monash University (Clayton) offers units for the degree of M.A. in Applied Linguistics and the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics, available through Open Universities.
The sequence comprises three compulsory units in the Masters Qualifying program (4th Year level) and any four of a range of 5th Year elective units (see below).
Each unit takes 13 weeks (one study period) to complete.
Students wishing to qualify for the Postgraduate Diploma (equivalent to the Masters Qualifying) could complete the entire sequence in as little as one year full time (or two years part time), whilst students wishing to qualify for the Master of Arts could generally do so in two (or four) years.
A maximum of ten years can be taken to finish either award. The media used to teach these units include print materials such as textbooks and workbooks and also audiovisual aids such as audio cassettes and video tapes.

The M.A. in Applied Linguistics Course
The M.A. in Applied Linguistics is a coursework degree which is awarded on the completion of two courses: Masters Qualifying (4th Year) and M.A. (5th Year). Some applicants (see section below on entry requirements) may be exempted from all or part of the units making up the Masters Qualifying course.
The M.A. in Applied Linguistics course deals with applications of linguistics to professional and social contexts in which language plays a crucial role. Present offerings are particularly suited to teachers of English as a mother tongue, as a second or foreign language, to teachers of languages other than English, to generalist primary school teachers, to language advisors, language consultants and those concerned with multicultural and language policies. People working in the media (advertising / journalism), in business / industry as well as in the service professions (health, law, social work) may also find this course useful as some units deal with applications of linguistics relevant to the media, the workplace and the professions.
The structure of the program can bee found on the Open Universities Australia Linguistics Program site.
Entry requirements
Students can have units taken through Open Universities (previously Open Learning) credited towards the M.A. in Applied Linguistics if they satisfy the general entry requirements. Applicants should hold at least a pass bachelors degree with a major in linguistics or a major in English or another language with results at least at credit standard in the third part of the major. Applicants holding an appropriate honours degree with a grade of H2B or above (or equivalent) may be exempt from all or part of the Masters Qualifying program.
Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics
Students wishing to complete only the three 4th Year units may elect to take out the Post-graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics instead of the Masters degree.
The structure of the program can bee found on the Open Universities Australia Linguistics Program site.
