Master of Linguistics in Language Endangerment Studies

Why should I do a Masters?

The Masters of Linguistics in Language Endangerment Studies is designed to give students thorough theoretical and applied training in Language Endangerment studies.

Masters students are required to apply their theoretical knowledge in the final unit of study, ALM5510 Language Maintenance in Practice. In this unit, students develop and implement a research project designed to support and strengthen language maintenance practice within a community or organisation.

Students who complete a Masters of Linguistics in Language Endangerment Studies with a distinction average are also eligible to apply for a Research Masters in Linguistics.

Course structure

At Monash University, full-time enrolment is 24 credit points per semester and part-time enrolment is usually 12 credit points per semester. International students must be enrolled as full-time students to meet the requirements of the student visa.

To attain the Master of Linguistics in Language Endangerment Studies, students must complete 72 credit points. This is 3 semesters/1.5 years of full-time enrolment, or 6 semesters/3 years of part-time enrolment. Students must achieve a credit in core units and a credit average overall.

Students may begin their studies in either first or second semester. The course can be taken on-campus or by distance education through MUSO (Monash University Studies Online).

The course is made up of four compulsory core units at fourth and fifth year level, and an elective at fourth or fifth year level. A typical full-time enrolment path looks like this:

Students who are exempted from any of the core units will select additional electives from Group 3.

Credit and Exemptions

Students who have already completed undergraduate linguistics studies will likely be exempted from the Group 1 core unit ALM4110 General Linguistics. Students who have already completed a Group 2 core unit in their undergraduate studies at Monash will be exempted from those Group 2 core units. Students in these categories will select additional electives from Group 3.

Students who have already completed the Graduate Certificate of Linguistics in Language Endangerment may receive 'advanced standing' (receive credit) for a maximum of 24 credit points at 4th year level, provided a credit average was achieved in the Graduate Certificate.

Students who have already completed the Postgraduate Diploma of Linguistics in Language Endangerment may receive 'advanced standing' (receive credit) for a maximum of 48 credit points at 4th year level, provided a credit average was achieved in the Postgraduate Diploma.

Students wishing to apply to receive credit for previous related study and/or work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis and should contact the Coordinator for Studies in Language Endangerment.

Transferring to the Masters

Students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma in Linguistics in Language Endangerment Studies may transfer to the Masters program provided they have obtained credits in the 3 core units and an overall credit average.

Beyond the Masters of Linguistics in Language Endangerment Studies

Students who achieve an average of distinction or better in the core units may be admitted to a MA Research and undertake two further 12 credit point coursework subjects and a 20,000-25,000 word research thesis.

Exiting the Masters before completion

Students may exit the Masters Program with a Postgraduate Diploma in Linguistics in Language Endangerment Studies after successful completion of 48 points (comprising 36 points of core units and a 12 point elective).

Students may exit the Masters program with a Graduate Certificate in Linguistics in Language Endangerment after successful completion of 24 points (comprising 24 points of core units).

Distance Education and Online Learning

Students who enrol as on-campus students will be expected to attend lectures. Students who enrol as off-campus students by distance education will be able to listen to lectures online and download course materials and readings from unit websites. All distance education students must have easy access to the internet and printing facilities.

All students enrolled in courses in Studies in Language Endangerment will be required to engage in online discussion and complete online assessment tasks via MUSO (Monash University Studies Online). These unit websites serve as online tutorials, discussion forums, unit calendars and more.
