Distance Education (Off-campus Learning)
Distance education means studying a course without actually going to the university for lectures and tutorials. At Monash University, this type of study is called 'off-campus learning'. Students can choose to study on-campus, off-campus, or a mix of these modes. Links to information and support for off-campus learning are listed below.
Off-campus students receive their study materials in the post as well as via the internet and do their study at home. They send their work to their lecturer in the post or online through the internet. Courses and units in Language Endangerment Studies are designed so that students will do a lot of their learning online. Students can download readings and assignments, participate in class discussions and complete assessment tasks online.
Students will have contact with their lecturers through email and the phone, but most contact with both lecturers and fellow students will be through MUSO (Monash University Studies Online).
Off-campus learning is very flexible. Provided students have access to the internet, Studies in Language Endangerment can be done almost anywhere in the world. For language practitioners working in remote areas, off-campus learning may be the best way to gain qualifications in Language Endangerment Studies without having to leave the field. International students who prefer to study at home may also choose to study via off-campus learning.
Students in Language Endangerment are required to be affiliated with a language community or organisation which is engaged in language maintenance. The location of some of these communities or organisations may require students to be away from Monash University for extended periods to carry out practical components of the course. These students may elect to complete some units via off-campus learning, provided they have internet access in the field.
