Master of Applied Linguistics by research
MA by thesis alone
The MA by 100% Research will be earned on the basis of a thesis of between 30,000 and 40,000 words or 120-160 pages in length (double line-spacing, 12pt font); there is no mandatory coursework, though attendance at one or another unit may be recommended. A MA by 100% Research normally takes two years of full-time study. A maximum of four years part-time study is permitted.
Applicants for direct admission to MA by 100% Research are normally expected to already have an Undergraduate Honours degree in Linguistics or some related area passed at the level of Distinction (H2A) or better. The applicant must also be able to show a grade of Distinction or better for a thesis of at least 10,000 words written at Undergraduate Honours level. Applicants without such qualifications may apply for the MA by Coursework and 66% Research (see below) or the Masters Qualifying course.

MA with 33% Coursework
The MA by Coursework and 66% Research will earn the degree on the basis of successful completion of 24 points of coursework in Linguistics and a thesis of between 20,000 and 25,000 words or 80-100 pages. MA by Coursework and Research is normally one and a half years full time study; three years part-time. Applicants who have completed a Graduate Diploma or a Masters degree by coursework at fourth year level with distinction results in at least of the subjects without an independent, supervised research project, may also apply to be admitted to the 66% degree. If accepted, such applicants will enroll for a research project at fifth-year level as part of their 24 points of coursework. Applicants without such qualifications may apply for the Masters Qualifying course.
